Offer full description:

The La Brea Tar Pits and Museum is seeking to hire (2) temporary, full-time Excavators to assist with the summer excavation of Pit 91 in Hancock Park.  Work will take place between June 1st 2017 through September 15th 2017, with a work week from Wednesday through Sunday.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Resumption of excavation within the previously defined grid system
  • Adherence to previously established excavation procedures
  • Daily documentation of work accomplished via field notes
  • Routine asphalt and water removal on a daily or as-needed basis
  • Closure of the excavation at the end of the season

Job requirements:

  • Previous paleontological or archaeological field experience
  • Ability to follow directions to ensure that all work is executed correctly and safely
  • Experience working with and around power tools
  • Willingness to work full days in a covered outside area in various weather conditions, including high temperatures
  • Ability to perform extended periods of standing, stooping, climbing, lifting, pulling, pushing and reaching
  • Must be capable of repeatedly lifting up to 50 lbs
  • Daily contact with liquid asphalt, asphaltic matrix, and ground water
  • Occasional need to wear protective equipment (respirator, goggles, gloves, etc.)
  • Willingness to work in public view in excavation site, (15) feet below ground surface
  • Willingness to interact with the public or news media as required
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in teams
  • Excellent organizational/time management skills

Competitive salary and benefits. This is a full time, temporary, non-exempt, overtime-eligible position.
