Mário Cachão


Born in 1961 on a small locality near Lisbon soon became interested by the rich and diversified fossil record of the Lusitanian Basin. Immediately after accomplishing his graduation in Geology (1984) at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, was invited as a full-time teacher and researcher at the Department of Geology while prepared and presented his M.Sc. (1990), Ph.D. (1996) and Aggregation (2005) studies in Stratigraphy and Paleontology at this same University. Mário has been teaching and researching in Geology and Paleontology for more than 30 years, has tutored extensively in those areas, has numerous specialized international publications and is affiliated with diverse national and international scientific organizations. He has complementary activities on Science Popularization (e.g. Summer Geology), on the promotion of scientific actualization training for High school teachers and as a consultant on Geological Heritage and Geoparks. He is currently the Portuguese coordinator of ProGEO. He also develops an innovative program for teaching earth sciences (Rocha Amiga) to K12 students.



Mário is specialized on calcareous nannofossils although have been working with a wide range of micro and macrofossils, both invertebrates and vertebrates, as well as trace fossils, mainly from the Mesozoic and Cenozoic. Is responsible for the single laboratory in Portugal totally devoted to the study of calcareous nannofossils in all its aspects. Is currently responsible for teaching General Paleontology (2nd year, Geology course) and General Geology to other courses, together with other more specific disciplines as Micropaleontology, Paleoecology and Paleoceanography to master courses on Geology and on Marine Sciences (which is currently the Coordinator). His core research is on numerical and statistical paleoenvironmental analysis and Climate Change of the Neogene and Quaternary while provides biostratigraphical output to a variety of scientific partners.
