“Postdoc position at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland

Are you interested in Arctic climate change and paleoceanography? Do you have experience working with marine sediment records and climate proxies?
A postdoc position is available at the Department of Glaciology and Climate for a highly motivated scientist to join a research project aimed at reconstructing marine environmental change in High Arctic Greenland, with focus on sea ice and ocean variability during the Holocene.
Job description
The candidate will integrate the Past Climate and Environments (PACE) research group at our department and be involved in a multi-proxy study aimed at reconstructing sea ice variability and ocean circulation changes during the Holocene in the Northern Baffin Bay – North Water Polynya region and off Northeast Greenland. Both micropaleontological and biogeochemical analyses will be central to the project, and therefore the candidate is expected to be an expert in marine micropaleontology (foraminifera, diatoms, or dinoflagellate cysts) and have some experience or at least a strong interest in biomarker analyses (HBIs, IP25). The position will involve a number of research visits to project partners both in Denmark and abroad (e.g. Aarhus University, and Laval University in Québec) and therefore the candidate should be motivated to travel and work in close collaboration with the different project partners.
The appointment will be made on the basis of academic qualifications. Upon appointment, particular emphasis is placed on the following qualifications:
– A relevant PhD degree in Natural/Earth Sciences. Candidates who have recently submitted their PhD thesis and will obtain the degree before appointment are also eligible for the position.
– Experience working with marine sediment core records, preferably from high latitudes.
– Expertise in marine micropaleontology and multivariate statistics is mandatory. Experience with biomarker analyses will be considered an asset.
Proficiency in English is required and excellent organization and communication skills are important. A positive attitude and motivation to actively contribute to a dynamic work environment are highly valued and an interest in achieving a basic understanding of Danish is expected.
The Department of Glaciology and Climate
The department has a staff of about 25 researchers, PhD students and postdocs. The department has an informal and friendly working environment, and a strong international and interdisciplinary profile.
The staff is dedicated to two main research areas: 1) paleo-oceanography, climate and environmental history of the Holocene in the Northern Hemisphere (mainly Greenland, Denmark, and the Baltic Sea region); 2) Glaciology of Greenland. We provide advice to the Danish Energy Agency, the Danish Nature Agency and the Danish Environmental Protection Agency. We monitor the melting of the Greenland ice sheet (PROMICE) and are engaged in multiple research projects dealing with climate and environmental history questions.

Salary and conditions of employment 
Salary is in accordance with the collective agreements between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the relevant eligible trade union.
Duration of the contract is 12 months (with possibility for extension) starting 1 June. Employment conditions include 37 hours of weekly work.
The appointment area is the Danish Ministry of Energy, Utilities and Climate and its institutions.
